Congrats to Manila Diggers

Congrats to Manila Diggers for the win against Dewa United. That’s honestly a really good result for a Philippine club. Indonesian teams usually come from a much bigger football scene with more money, more fans, and stronger leagues, so beating a club like that in an Asian competition is not something small.

But at the same time, something felt a bit sad watching the match. It was played at Rizal Memorial Stadium, tickets were free, it was an international competition… and still the stadium looked almost empty. For a game like that, with free tickets, it’s honestly crazy that there were so few people in the stands.

It just shows again how difficult it is for football here to bring people to the stadium.

That’s why sometimes people think about crazy ideas. Imagine if somehow the strength on the field of Manila Diggers could combine with the fan energy of Manila Montet. One club already very strong on the field, the other already showing it can bring attention, supporters, and noise around the team.

Of course this probably won’t happen, and nobody even knows what the relationship between the two clubs is. It’s just a random thought from a fan watching the game and thinking how powerful a club could be if you had the performances of one and the fan power of the other.
